Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard acquisition: Merger issue update

Posted : 17 July 2023
In early 2022, Microsoft made headlines with its announcement of the intention to acquire Activision Blizzard, a leading gaming company, for a staggering $68.7 billion (~£50.5 billion). The news was hailed as one of the most influential deals in gaming history. However, as of June 2023, the merger has not yet materialized due to numerous legal hurdles, lawsuits, and government inquiries from around the world. The future of the deal remains uncertain, and there is no clear timeline for its completion.

Regulators globally have expressed concerns about the potential impact of the acquisition on competition in the gaming market. With Microsoft already owning Xbox, there are fears that the merger could give the tech giant too much power, especially in the console gaming sector. There are worries that Microsoft may make Activision Blizzard's games, such as the highly successful Call of Duty franchise, exclusive to its consoles, which could stifle competition with rivals Sony and Nintendo. There are also concerns about the impact on the growing cloud gaming market.

While both Microsoft and Activision Blizzard are US-based companies, approval from other countries is necessary for the merger to proceed. Failure to obtain approval in certain countries could restrict the newly-merged entity from conducting business there.

It's worth noting that Microsoft has been on a significant spending spree, acquiring other gaming companies like 343 Industries, Obsidian Entertainment, Playground Games, and ZeniMax (the owner of Bethesda) for more than $6 billion. However, the acquisition of Activision would be Microsoft's largest purchase to date.

The merger has already received approval in several markets worldwide, including the European Union, Ukraine, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Chile, Japan, South Africa, South Korea, and China.

Serbia, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, and Chile were among the first countries to approve it in 2022, with additional approvals coming in the spring of 2023. The latest country to approve the merger was South Korea, on May 30, 2023.
