Manchester Esports Academy collaborates with City in the community charity for pilot programme

Posted : 20 September 2023
The Manchester Esports Academy (MEA) has joined forces with City in the Community, Manchester City's official charity, to launch a six-week grassroots esports program. Starting on September 23rd, this partnership will provide training and coaching in esports for 20 young individuals from the Greater Manchester area, with a particular focus on young carers and those from low-income backgrounds. Additionally, the program aims to educate parents about career pathways within the esports industry.

Established in June 2023 by IN4 Group's Gametech, the Manchester Esports Academy aims to discover the next generation of esports talents through its collaboration with City in the Community.

The six-week course will be held at Gametech's campus in the Home of Skills & Technology, Salford, and will be led by coaches certified by the Esports Coaching Academy.

While this marks City in the Community's first venture into esports, Manchester City, its affiliated football club, has been involved in the esports scene for several years. Manchester City has its own competitive division in Fortnite and has partnered with organizations like FaZe Clan and Gen.G to host various esports events.

Sam Dainty, Head of Partnerships and Fundraising at City in the Community, expressed their enthusiasm for this initiative, stating, "We are pleased to be taking our first step into esports as a charity by offering this pilot scheme to our young participants. City in the Community exists to empower healthier lives through football, which includes building education and employability pathways for city youth through our Healthy Futures programs. I know this ethos also rings true for the Manchester Esports Academy, and we are looking forward to seeing how this collaborative project can create new opportunities and skills for our participants."
