North American esports and gaming technology firm LeagueSpot has acquired the community-centric esports company Mission Control. This acquisition marks Mission Control's strategic move to extend its reach beyond the esports domain into traditional sports within North America. The financial specifics of the deal have not been disclosed.
Founded in 2018, Mission Control has developed a reputation as a key platform for grassroots esports, supporting initiatives like the Esports State Championship. The company has also partnered with notable broadband provider Xfinity and has worked with over 300 organizations over the past six years. The acquisition is expected to enhance Mission Control's ability to engage with both esports and traditional sports communities.
In addition to the acquisition, Taryn McCarty and Rob Johnson of Ventnor Ventures have been appointed to LeagueSpot’s Board of Directors. Their experience in scaling operations and driving revenue in the sports sector is anticipated to be valuable as LeagueSpot continues to grow and diversify its offerings. LeagueSpot has previously collaborated with Epic Charter Schools and secured a multi-year agreement with the collegiate esports league NACE Starleague.
Austin Smith, CEO of Mission Control, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, noting that joining LeagueSpot will enable the company to leverage an advanced platform while expanding into traditional sports. The youth sports sector is experiencing significant growth, generating approximately $10 billion annually, which continues to attract interest in integrating esports with traditional sports, as demonstrated by recent collaborations like the e2Real sim racing league.
