KONAMI, FIFA Collaborate on Esports-Focused FIFAe World Cup

Japanese game developer KONAMI and football's governing body FIFA have entered into a partnership focused on enhancing the role of esports within the football industry. This collaboration will feature two FIFAe World Cup events hosted on KONAMI’s eFootball title, showcasing the growing intersection of traditional sports and digital gaming.

 

The FIFAe World Cup competitions, which will utilize both console and mobile platforms, are scheduled to take place later in 2024. While the specific dates for these events have yet to be announced, qualifying matches for both tournaments are set to begin today, October 10th. The partnership aims to engage a wider audience and provide an exciting platform for esports enthusiasts.

 

Eighteen nations have been invited to participate in the upcoming competitions, with selections made based on their eFootball player bases and past performances in FIFAe events. The participating countries include Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, England, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea Republic, Malaysia, Morocco, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Thailand, and Türkiye, highlighting a diverse representation from around the globe.

 

KONAMI has been proactive in expanding its esports presence, particularly since FIFA's split from EA Sports in 2023. In August, FIFAe organized its first multi-title esports event in Liverpool, featuring eFootball and Sports Interactive's Football Manager. Additionally, the FIFAe World Cup will introduce a Rocket League competition later this year.

 

Koji Kobayashi, Senior Executive Officer at KONAMI, expressed gratitude to FIFA for the collaboration, emphasizing their commitment to developing football simulation and esports while looking forward to the excitement of the FIFAe World Cup.
