Intel Extreme Masters returns to Australia for first time since 2019
Posted : 22 June 2023
After a four-year hiatus, the Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) tournament series organized by ESL will be returning to Australia.
IEM Sydney is scheduled to take place in October at the Aware Super Theatre as part of the SXSW Sydney Games Festival. This marks the first IEM event in Australia since 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted live events.
The Sydney event has been a popular stop for IEM in the past, with successful editions held in 2017, 2018, and 2019. The reigning champions of IEM Sydney are Team Liquid.
This year's IEM Sydney will span three days and will be integrated into the broader SXSW festival, which encompasses music, art, technology, and gaming. The SXSW Sydney Games Festival 2023 will feature an extensive indie games showcase, a games industry conference, and an investment summit.
Additionally, there will be a tabletop games festival and an XR showcase, providing an immersive experience for all visitors attending the Games Festival.
The IEM event will feature a combination of partner teams, ESL-invited teams based on their global rankings, and winners of four open qualifiers representing the EU, NA, Asia, and Oceania regions.
