IEM Rio 2024 Sees Surge in Viewership, Highlighting Growing Popularity of Counter-Strike 2

Posted : 14 October 2024

The IEM Rio 2024 Counter-Strike 2 event witnessed a significant boost in viewership compared to the previous year's edition. Held in Brazil, this event marked only the second instance of IEM Rio (excluding the 2022 Major) and achieved a peak viewership of 709,317, which is approximately 150,000 higher than the peak for IEM Rio 2023. According to Esports Charts, the event ranks as the eighth most-watched esports competition of the year.

In addition to the peak numbers, the average viewership for this year was also impressive, with around 40,000 more viewers tuning in than last year, averaging 289,111 over nearly 50 hours of content. It's important to note that the two editions of the event were held at different times of the year, with IEM Rio 2023 taking place in April, which could have contributed to the difference in viewership statistics.

The tournament concluded with Ukrainian esports organization Natus Vincere (NAVI) defeating German team MOUZ in a thrilling best-of-five Grand Final. Both NAVI and MOUZ were the most-watched teams throughout the event, with NAVI recording an impressive 5.8 million hours viewed and MOUZ close behind at 5.6 million. Brazilian team FURIA ranked third in viewership with 2.4 million hours, despite not making it to the finals.

Language streams also showcased interesting trends, with Portuguese broadcasts peaking at 245,503 viewers, nearly matching the English stream’s peak of 294,124. Other significant peaks were seen in Russian (177,548), Ukrainian (85,741), and Mongolian (37,335) streams, the latter likely reflecting interest due to The MongolZ finishing in the top eight. Twitch continued to lead as the primary streaming platform, achieving a peak of 460,206 viewers, followed by YouTube at 268,271 and TikTok Live with 111,000.
