Esports legend Faker achieves record fifth League of Legends title

Posted : 04 November 2024

Lee Sang-hyeok, known globally as “Faker,” is a prominent figure in the esports world, particularly recognized for his prowess in League of Legends. On November 3, 2024, he showcased his exceptional skills once again, leading his team, T1, to a hard-fought 3-2 victory over China’s Bilibili Gaming (BLG) in the grand final of the League of Legends World Championship held at London’s O2 Arena. This victory marks Faker's fifth championship title, an unprecedented achievement in the game's history, earning him accolades like “Unkillable Demon King” and “Esports Living Legend.” Many fans draw parallels between him and sports legends such as Lionel Messi and Michael Jordan, reflecting his status as one of the greatest of all time (GOAT) in the gaming realm.

Faker's journey in this championship saw him team up with fellow players Choi Woo-je (Zeus), Moon Hyeon-joon (Oner), Lee Min-hyung (Gumayusi), and Ryu Min-seok (Keria). This squad previously finished as runners-up in 2022 and triumphed in 2023, further solidifying their dominance in the esports scene. With five World Championship titles to his name—achieved in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2023, and 2024—Faker's achievements are unmatched, particularly when compared to his closest rival, Bae Sung-woong (Bengi), who retired with three titles. This latest victory also earned Faker his second MVP award, making him the first player to receive this honor twice, highlighting his influence since he debuted professionally at just 17.

Beyond his gaming achievements, Faker's impact resonates throughout the sports industry. In 2023, he was featured in The Times' “Top 10 Sports Powers,” joining the ranks of celebrated athletes like Lionel Messi and Shohei Ohtani. Although his exact earnings remain private, estimates suggest he earns around 10 billion won (approximately $7.29 million) annually, making him the highest-paid esports player in South Korea. Notably, he declined a staggering $20 million annual offer from a Chinese League of Legends team two years ago, prioritizing personal growth and skill enhancement over financial incentives.

In recognition of his contributions to the esports community, Faker was the inaugural inductee into the League of Legends Esports Hall of Fame, dubbed the “Hall of Legends.” To honor his legacy, Riot Games established a temporary “Faker Temple” in Seoul in May and June, celebrating his career milestones. His popularity is reflected in the adoration he receives from fans, particularly in China, where they refer to him as ‘Mountain High, River Long,’ a testament to his remarkable skill and tenacity. The recent World Championship final featuring Faker attracted an astounding 6.94 million viewers, marking it as the most-watched event in esports history.

With a career record of 964 wins and 469 losses, Faker boasts a win rate of 67.3%, positioning him alongside other sporting icons like Michael Jordan and Lionel Messi, whose win rates are 65.9% and 67.8%, respectively. Esports commentators often express that “the era of League will end with Faker’s retirement,” emphasizing his significant influence on the game and its community. In addition to his five World Championship titles, Faker has also secured ten League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) titles, the inaugural League of Legends Esports World Cup (EWC), and a gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games.

Faker's fifth World Championship victory further cements his legacy as a titan in competitive gaming. His sustained excellence and ability to perform at the highest level, despite the influx of younger players in the esports arena, demonstrate his dedication and love for the game. As Faker continues to achieve new heights in his career, he inspires countless fans and aspiring gamers, embodying the spirit of perseverance and excellence that defines esports.
