The Confederation of Danish Industry (DI) has released a report stating that esports contributes nearly DDK 4.3 billion (~£492 million) annually to Denmark's GDP. This is accompanied by an esports turnover of DDK 10 billion (~£1.15 billion) in 2022. The report highlights Denmark's significant presence in the esports sector, particularly in Counter-Strike and League of Legends. The country has hosted CS:GO majors and is set to hold the first-ever CS:GO Major in Copenhagen.
Denmark's current annual GDP is approximately $405.6 billion (~£46.5 billion) in 2023. The popularity of gaming within the Danish public is on the rise, with the report revealing that 30% of adult Danes played games weekly in 2022, a notable increase from 10% in 2004.
The report also emphasizes the educational aspect of esports in Denmark, with 141 post-secondary schools and colleges involved in esports in some capacity. The esports industry and related businesses generate around 3,000 full-time positions in the country.
Despite Denmark's strong position in the esports industry, the report underscores the competition from other countries like France, Malta, and Saudi Arabia, which have been actively investing in esports. To counter this, DI suggests that the Danish government implement measures to support the local esports industry, including making esports more appealing to foreign talent, enhancing sector understanding, integrating esports with traditional elite sports, and providing grants for activities that strengthen esports' future.
