Crossfire Joins 2025 Esports World Cup Amid Saudi Controversy

Posted : 25 December 2024

The Esports World Cup Foundation has secured a three-year partnership with Smilegate, bringing the FPS title Crossfire into the 2025 Esports World Cup. This annual multi-title esports event, set to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, continues to expand its roster of games, which now includes a total of 18 titles such as Dota 2, Counter-Strike 2, Call of Duty, and Apex Legends.

Crossfire’s inclusion marks its debut at the event, following the earlier announcement of Chess as another first-time participant.

Crossfire, launched in 2007, has cultivated a significant fanbase, particularly in China, where it has hosted the franchised esports league CFPL since 2019. Its immense popularity even inspired the drama series Cross Fire in 2020, which amassed nearly a billion views within four weeks of its release.

This month, Crossfire concluded its world championship in Hangzhou, with Chinese team Evolution Power claiming victory and the majority of the $1.4 million prize pool. While specific details of Crossfire's 2025 Esports World Cup event, such as its prize pool and format, are yet to be disclosed, its inclusion signals further growth for its competitive ecosystem.

Despite its success, the Esports World Cup has faced criticism from parts of the esports community due to its association with the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund. Concerns surrounding the country’s human rights record have fueled ongoing debates about the ethics of its increasing investments in the gaming and esports industries.

However, Smilegate’s CEO, Ina Jang, expressed excitement about Crossfire’s inclusion, highlighting the game’s global community and the opportunity to showcase its competitive spirit on a broader stage.
