Complexity Gaming commits to Counter-Strike with player contract extensions amid FaZe Clan acquisition speculation

Posted : 05 January 2024

North American esports organization Complexity Gaming has affirmed its commitment to Counter-Strike by extending contracts for key players amid speculation about parent company GameSquare Holdings' plans following its pending acquisition of FaZe Clan.

Complexity's public statement on January 4th announced contract extensions for players JT, Floppy, Grim, and TC, expressing gratitude to fans and emphasizing their continued presence in the competitive scene.

While Complexity has secured its roster for the upcoming season, questions arise about GameSquare's decisions regarding Counter-Strike teams once the FaZe Clan acquisition is finalized, considering FaZe Clan's recent player signing in December.

The pending acquisition of FaZe Clan by GameSquare, announced in October 2023 and reported to be worth $17 million, has raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest. Both Complexity and FaZe Clan compete as rivals in major Counter-Strike tournaments and hold permanent partner status in ESL Pro League and BLAST Premier leagues.

Tournament organizers ESL and BLAST have acknowledged monitoring the situation, while Complexity's CEO and Founder Jason Lake, who sold his majority stake in 2017, reportedly expressed interest in repurchasing the organization from GameSquare, as per reports in December.

GameSquare, a holding company with esports assets including Complexity, esports agency Code Red, and analytics platform StreamHatchet, reported increased revenues in its recent financial reports. The pending FaZe Clan acquisition is said to be in its final stages, with GameSquare assuring more news soon.

Both GameSquare Esports and FaZe Clan are publicly traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange, with FaZe Clan going public in July 2022 and experiencing fluctuations in stock value since then, currently at 0.18 US cents. The esports community awaits further developments in this dynamic scenario.
