Apex Legends Global Series 2023 Championship breaks records with astonishing viewership and international success
Posted : 13 September 2023
The Apex Legends Global Series 2023 Championship soared to impressive heights as it solidified its place as the competition's third most-watched event, drawing in an astonishing peak viewership of over 590,000 fervent fans. This electrifying season-ending showdown unfolded at the illustrious Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, becoming an epicenter of esports excitement for enthusiasts worldwide.
Esports aficionados tuned in with unwavering dedication, resulting in an average viewership of approximately 223,000, spanning a jaw-dropping broadcast duration of over 47 hours, as meticulously documented by the esports data powerhouse, Esports Charts.
While the Apex Legends spectacle reached remarkable heights, its most iconic moment in terms of peak viewership still belongs to the ALGS: 2022 Split 2 Playoffs, an unforgettable clash that attracted a staggering 676,600 peak viewers. However, when it comes to the sheer magnitude of hours watched, the ALGS 2022 Championship from the previous year still reigns supreme with an awe-inspiring 11.3 million hours. The ALGS 2023 Championship, in comparison, etched its mark with a commendable 10.6 million hours watched.
This year's esports extravaganza was ultimately conquered by the formidable North American esports juggernaut, TSM, their valiant efforts securing them a monumental prize purse of $600,000 (~£468,000). The majority of the ALGS Championship's ardent viewership congregated on the ever-popular Twitch platform, reaching an exhilarating peak of 465,300. However, the magnetic allure of Apex Legends extended its grasp to YouTube as well, where it attracted a substantial peak viewership of 124,400.
In the grand tapestry of audience demographics, the English-speaking and Japanese-speaking platforms continued to dazzle with their peak figures, amassing a captivating 368,200 and 135,800 viewers, respectively.
The year 2023 marked a remarkable milestone for the ALGS as it chose to host all three of its prestigious international LAN events in a single country. London, England served as the hallowed grounds for ALGS' Split 1 and 2 Playoffs, while Birmingham proudly played host to the apex of the competition, the World Championship itself. Furthermore, the ALGS 2023 Championship shared the spotlight with the UK gaming festival, Insomnia, as a harmonious collaboration that saw both events offering enticing ticket price discounts to their enthusiastic attendees.
The decision to concentrate its marquee events within a single nation proved to be a resounding success, evident in the overwhelming viewership figures. In fact, all three of these momentous occasions have etched their names among the game's top five most-watched esports tournaments, a testament to Apex Legends' ever-growing appeal as a premier esports spectacle.
While these triumphs are undeniably impressive, it's important to acknowledge that the 2023 calendar of Apex Legends was unable to surpass the benchmarks set by the 2022 ALGS Championship and the ALGS: 2022 Split 2 Playoffs in certain key metrics. Yet, the future remains bright for this dynamic esport.
Notably, Apex Legends is not the only esports title to have found its home in England, particularly London, in 2023. The likes of League of Legends' MSI 2023 and the Call of Duty Mobile World Championships have also chosen this vibrant city as their stage, promising a thrilling year for esports enthusiasts on both sides of the screen.
