Activision has introduced new team skins for the Call of Duty League (CDL) as part of its latest release, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. These skins, set to be available in-game, include special bundles featuring both home and away versions of the Competitor Operator, a key character skin representing the CDL's presence within the game. This initiative is aimed at enhancing the visual identity of the league's teams and providing fans with customization options that showcase their support.
In the announcement, Activision revealed plans for multiple CDL-themed bundles that will be released during the first Battle Pass season of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. These bundles are expected to include a variety of items such as weapon camos, decals, sprays, emblems, and calling cards, all designed around popular CDL teams. However, details regarding the revenue distribution from the sales of these skins, particularly the share allocated to the teams, were not disclosed by Activision.
The skins feature a prominent display of each team's logo on the chest area of the operator character, providing a distinctive look for fans of specific CDL teams. Notably, some teams, like Cloud9 New York and LA Guerrillas, have adopted unique colour schemes for their skins, with vibrant shades of blue and purple deviating from the standard black. This variety allows players to further personalize their in-game experience while expressing allegiance to their favourite teams.
This move by Activision is part of a broader trend in the gaming industry, where esports franchises leverage in-game cosmetic items to support their teams. Similar strategies can be seen in other popular games such as Rocket League, with its esports shop, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive's sticker project, and VALORANT's in-game items for the VCT (VALORANT Champions Tour). By offering these CDL-themed skins, Activision aims to engage fans while providing an additional revenue stream for both the company and the participating esports teams.
