24-year-old Nigerian sets new Guinness World Record for gaming marathon

Posted : 17 July 2024

A 24-year-old Nigerian named Oside Oluwole has achieved a remarkable milestone by setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest video game marathon focused on soccer. His record-breaking endeavor has captivated many and highlights his dedication to the gaming community.

Unlike previous record holders who typically played popular titles like FIFA or Pro Evolution Soccer, Oluwole chose to play on his iPhone, which was connected to a television screen. This unique setup allowed him to stand out in the competition while showcasing his gaming skills in a different light.

During his attempt, Oluwole played over 500 matches, demonstrating incredible stamina and perseverance. His efforts did not go unnoticed, as the Guinness World Records (GWR) officially announced that he surpassed the former record of 50 hours, set by Englishman David Whitefoot in 2022, by an impressive margin of 75 hours.

Oluwole, a biochemistry graduate who has transitioned into a car dealership, undertook this challenge not just for personal achievement but also to raise funds for a local hospital in Ijebu Ode, his hometown. His philanthropic motivation added a meaningful dimension to his record attempt.

According to GWR regulations, Oluwole was allowed only five minutes of rest after each hour of gameplay. This strict rule tested his endurance and focus, making his achievement even more commendable.

This isn't the first time Nigerians have made headlines for setting records. In 2023, chef Hilda Baci broke the record for the longest cooking marathon, and in April 2024, Clara Chizoba Kronborg set a new record for the longest interview marathon, lasting over 55 hours. Additionally, Tunde Onakoya completed a 60-hour chess marathon earlier in April.

Reflecting on his experience, Oluwole described the attempt as both enjoyable and stressful. "I really enjoyed myself playing for 75 hours straight with just some hours of rest," he shared. "It wasn’t an easy task, but it was all fun. I’m grateful to God that it was successful and that I could create such a great moment."
