Betting company 1win has revealed plans to host a series of esports tournaments, with the inaugural event being a $100,000 Dota 2 competition titled the 1win Series Dota 2 Spring, scheduled from March 16th to 19th. Notable teams like Team Spirit, Team Liquid, and Virtus.pro are confirmed participants, alongside 1win Esports, the bookmaker's own esports division, which recently signed the Russian Dota 2 roster Klim Sani4 and secured a spot in ESL One Birmingham 2024 after competing in Counter-Strike events previously.
The tournament lineup comprises Team Liquid, L1GA Team, Entity, PSG.Quest, 1win, MOUZ, Virtus.pro, and Team Spirit. The competition format involves dividing the eight teams into two groups, with matches played in a GSL system, offering teams three chances to advance to the next round before facing elimination after two losses. The top two teams from each group will progress to the playoffs, adopting a single-elimination structure, with matches except for the final being Best of 3 series.
1win's initiative to organize its esports tournaments mirrors a trend among bookmakers, with an increasing number venturing into dedicated esports events. Notably, Betboom Dache Dota 2 tournaments are slated for 2024, while the Counter-Strike 2 Thunderpick World Championship's second edition is set to kick off in April. This move reflects the broader engagement of the betting industry in the esports scene, with platforms like Pinnacle and GG.BET having previously hosted similar esports activations.
