What could be regarded as a carnival-like atmosphere at the Yucateco Headquarters in Ikorodu, Yucateco Boxing Promotions rounded off activities for the year 2024 with Week 18 hostilities of the Yucateco Boxing League.
With over 10,000 boxing fans and spectators in attendance, the event brought about the best blend of entertainment and sports, with live musical performances at intervals.
On the night, action in the squared ropes featured 28 competitive bouts in various categories, including two Pan-African Championship contests, which saw great performances from the respective pugilists.
The first Pan-African Championship bout of the night was a 57kg contest between Ramadan Abodunrin and Habeeb Ajishola.
Both boxers displayed great skills in all five rounds before Ajishola received the nod from the referees for a split decision win.
The other Pan-African Championship bout was keenly contested, but Micheal Ogunremi showed grit and determination to secure victory over Quam Musefiu in the 57kg brawl.
Expressing satisfaction with the progress made thus far, founder of the amateur boxing league and President of the Boxing Promoters Association of Nigeria, Omonlie Yakubu Imadu, pledged more projects to set the pace for the growth of the sport.
"2024 was truly an eventful year for the promotion. Aside from the boxing league, we also staged the Yucateco Pan-African Boxing Championships in Togo, Benin Republic, as well as in Nigeria during the past year.
"The organization also hosted its maiden Boxing Awards in Lagos to honor those who have contributed to the growth and development of the sport in our nation over the years; it was truly a great year, I must say."
The Yucateco Boss further outlined the promotional activities for 2025, with a maiden WBC Amateur Boxing Championship leading the pack.
"In February, Yucateco will be hosting the first-ever World Boxing Council (WBC) Amateur Boxing Championship in Africa, and the event will be staged in Lagos.
"We also have the second edition of the annual Yucateco Boxing Award scheduled for April, as well as other grassroots development programs lined up for 2025."
The Yucateco Boxing League Season 2 will climax with the grand finale at the end of this month.
Twelve (12) accredited boxing clubs are competing for the grand prize of N50 million.
The most valuable boxer in each weight category will also receive the sum of N2 million each.
