Tyson Fury, WBC heavyweight champion to face Francis Ngannou

Posted : 11 July 2023
Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champion, aged 36, has no prior experience in professional boxing.

The upcoming fight between Team Fury and Ngannou will not be an exhibition match. It will adhere to the official rules of professional boxing, with three judges present at ringside who will use the 10-point must system to score the bout.

During the fight in Riyadh, Fury will not be defending his WBC title.

Referring to his 'Gypsy King' nickname, Fury confidently commented, "This guy is supposed to be the hardest puncher in the world, but let's see how he reacts when he gets hit by the Big GK."

Ngannou expressed his excitement about the opportunity to box against Fury, stating, "It's a dream come true to step into the ring with Tyson. I've been waiting for this moment for the past three years."

Fury's participation in this non-title fight was approved by the WBC, who granted him "special permission" since he doesn't currently have any mandatory challengers lined up.

After failing to reach an agreement with Oleksandr Usyk for an undisputed fight earlier this year, Fury opted for an unexpected choice.

Fury's co-promoter, Frank Warren, hinted that a fight with Usyk in 2023 is unlikely, especially after Usyk signed with Saudi Arabia's Skill Challenge Promotions.

"They're saying that will be in February next year," Warren stated regarding Team Usyk's plans. "If everyone were to sit around waiting for them, we'd have a problem. We're not sitting around; we're moving forward."

Usyk, the Ukrainian fighter, is scheduled to defend his titles against Daniel Dubois, his WBA mandatory challenger, in August. Usyk had initially hoped to fight Fury in December.

Criticism has been directed towards Fury for his failure to reach terms with Usyk and his choice of opponent. However, Warren dismissed these claims, emphasizing that the 34-year-old Fury is not avoiding any fighter.

"For anyone to suggest that Tyson is ducking anyone is absolutely ridiculous," Warren affirmed. "He is the best heavyweight of his generation. None of them, and I represent interim champions and those fighting for world titles... Tyson is the best of his generation at this moment in time."
