The Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) has announced that the overseas training stage for its wrestlers' preparations for the 2024 Paris Olympics will commence on Monday in Saarbrucken, Germany.

NWF President Daniel Igali stated that the overseas training will follow the ongoing local camp in Yenagoa, which will conclude on Sunday.

"Preparations for the Olympics are proceeding smoothly. We have been in camp in Yenagoa for over two weeks, and the training has been going well," said Igali.

"We have five athletes bound for the Olympics and three training partners each in the camp. The only male among the Olympic-bound wrestlers who is not yet in camp is Ashton Mutuwa, who is based in the U.S.

"Adekuoroye, also based in the U.S., has now joined us. Mutuwa will join the overseas camp due to his specific circumstances. He has excellent training partners in the U.S., and we want to continue that because we are satisfied with his training situation, which we are closely monitoring," he added.

Igali assured that Mutuwa is under close monitoring, and so far, the NWF is impressed with his progress.

He also mentioned that Adekuoroye has focused on pacing and strength training.

"We believe that she has good training partners here in Nigeria that will truly prepare her for the Olympics, as we have high hopes for her performance," said the NWF President.

He revealed that while the wrestlers are expected to train in Germany for three weeks, the federation hopes they will remain there until the end of July.

"We won't begin competing until August 5, and we would like to spend four days in the Games Village prior to our events," Igali explained.

Additionally, Purity Akuh, the head coach of the female wrestling team, stated that the athletes and their training partners are in the preparation phase and working diligently.

As the coach, Akuh expressed expectations that each qualified athlete will win medals at the Paris Games.

Nigeria will be represented by six wrestlers, including five females and one male, at the Games. The team includes Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Blessing Oborodudu in the 68kg category, Odunayo Adekuoroye in the 57kg, and Hannah Reuben in the 76kg, all competing in the female category.

Christiana Ogunsanya will compete in the 62kg category, Esther Kolawole in the 62kg, and Ashton Mutuwa in the 125kg category as the lone male representative.
