Saul "Canelo" Alvarez v John Ryder: The rise of the Mexican boxing champions
Posted : 05 May 2023
The king is the focus of this weekend. The dominant figure in Mexican boxing, Saul "Canelo," returns to the place where it all started.
On Saturday at Guadalajara's Estadio Akron, undisputed super-middleweight champion Alvarez will defend his IBF, WBA, WBC, and WBO crowns against Briton John Ryder.
The fight's slogan is "The King is returning home," and fight excitement is raging through the state of Jalisco's ancient capital, the birthplace of tequila and mariachi culture, faster than a typical Alvarez body shot.
"It's an honour. I'm happy to be part of this history in my own town," 32-year-old Alvarez, who will fight Mexico for the first time since 2011, says.
The adolescent who was taunted because of his red hair and freckles has developed into the hottest commodity in boxing. From peddling ice cream on a bus to filling stadiums, he has come a long way. The Alvarez narrative is both astounding and inspirational.
