On a memorable night in Guadalajara, local favorite Saul "Canelo" Alvarez defeated Britain's John Ryder in front of 50,000 loud Mexican supporters.
Despite an energetic performance by Ryder at Estadio Akron, the Mexican champion successfully defended his undisputed super-middleweight title on points.
The 32-year-old Alvarez controlled the fight and knocked Ryder out in round five, but the Londoner recovered strongly.
Alvarez won the fight with two judges' scores of 118-109 and 120-107, respectively.
With two defeats and two draws in his 59 fights since going professional, the four-weight world champion finally prevailed.
"I'm happy with the fight. I won and I'm happy people had a great fight," Alvarez told reporters
"He's a strong fighter. I knew that; I'm not surprised about it."
Ryder said: "I've dared to do and I've come up short. The overriding thing is I'm gutted."
After being defeated by British fighter Callum Smith for the WBA "Super" championship in 2019, this was Ryder's sixth defeat in 38 fights, making him the second world champion to lose twice.
