Sandy Ryan: Olympic setback to near-unification in two years
Posted : 21 September 2023
Sandy Ryan, after becoming the WBO welterweight champion in April, is set to defend her title against Jessica McCaskill, the WBC and WBA champion.
This high-stakes match in Orlando will determine the unified world title holder. Ryan's journey to professional boxing was inspired by her brother's boxing career, starting at age 14.
Though she had early success as an amateur, a change in Olympic qualifications due to Covid-19 led her to turn professional earlier than expected.
After a significant setback against Erica Farias, she rebounded, winning the WBO belt despite an injury shortly before the fight.
As her success continues, Derby City Council considers awarding her the Freedom of the City, making her the potential first woman to receive it.
