Oleksandr Usyk Becomes Boxing's First Four-Belt Undisputed Heavyweight World Champion

Posted : 20 May 2024

In a poignant moment, Oleksandr Usyk paid tribute to his late father after achieving a monumental milestone in his boxing career, emerging as the sport's first four-belt undisputed heavyweight world champion. The 37-year-old Ukrainian secured a split decision victory over Britain's Tyson Fury in Riyadh, marking a historic moment in boxing history with the first heavyweight unification bout in over two decades.

Having already amassed an illustrious career as a former European and world amateur champion, Olympic gold medalist, and undisputed cruiserweight champion, Usyk's undefeated status as a professional boxer now reaches its zenith with the acquisition of the ultimate boxing crown. Despite sustaining a cut above his right eye that required four stitches and facing the need for a jaw scan post-fight, Usyk's triumph was tempered with a profound sense of loss as he remembered his father, who passed away following his Olympic success in 2012.

Reflecting on the sacrifices made during his grueling eight-month training camp for the Fury fight, including missing significant family milestones like his daughter's birth, Usyk's emotional victory underscored the depth of dedication and determination that fueled his journey to boxing greatness. While there was controversy surrounding the referee's intervention in the ninth round, potentially denying Usyk a knockout victory, the Ukrainian remained composed, asserting that the win itself was paramount, irrespective of the circumstances surrounding it.
