Nigeria's first female WBC African Super Bantamweight Champion, sets sight on World title

Posted : 28 June 2023
Adijat Gbadamosi, the first Nigerian female boxer to be crowned African Super Bamtamweight Champion, is now hoping for a shot at the World title in U.S.

Gbadamosi, basking in the euphoria of her victory in the just-concluded World Boxing Council medal championships hosted by African Boxing Union in Ghana, in an interview with Africa Sport Network (ASN) on Thursday declared her readiness for a world title fight.

The Osun-state born ace boxer, Gbadamosi had entered the history books after winning the African Boxing Union, ABU, title in Ghana.

In the Co-main event of the title fight, Adijat ‘Dija’ Gbadamosi made history becoming the first Nigerian woman to win an African boxing title.

Gbadamosi, a 2018 youth Olympic Silver medalist won a TKO victory over Zimbawean Soldier girl, Patience Mastara in the fifth round of their scheduled ten rounds to win the Africa Super Bantamweight female title.

Gbadamosi however said the victory was not a mean feat, adding that achieving such a historic win over an active soldier who many had thought would knock her down was gratifying.

"It was such a great moment when I won the bout and to enter the history book as the first Nigerian female to win WBC title.

"I saw the bout as a challenge for me and I did prepare well ahead knowing the pedigree of my opponent. My opponent is an active soldier many wouldn't have given me a chance against.

"My opponent is a fighter and facing her is not easy for me, but thank God I was able to defeat her and win the title for myself and my country."

Gbadamosi who claimed to have started boxing career at eight years old also disclosed that boxing has been her passion from the start.

"I grew up to love boxing and I have been training as a boxer since the age of eight.

"I have no opposition from the family because for me it is a passion and I have long decided to go for it and now I have no regret.

"I have a great future ahead of me as a boxer because I have a target of becoming the first Nigerian to be crowned WBC champions a leap away from my African ABU Title.

"The WBC title fight is coming up later in the year maybe November, and I need a lot of support and trainings even five times more than what has gotten me this African belt," she said.

Gbadamosi then called on the Osun and Lagos State Government, and the Federal Government to come to her aid in achieving her lofty dream.

"It is not a bad dream to put Nigeria in the face of the world again if I become the world champions, so, right now I need the support of the government.

"I want a recognition by my State Governor, Ademola Adeleke to help me in whatever way, the Lagos State government and the federal government alike.

"I want to make Nigeria proud and I want Nigeria to be proud of me," she said.

Gbadamosi won the competition which was in instalment of Monarch Events and Promotions ‘King of the Ring’ series held at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, Ghana.

The arena attracted huge card of international boxers headlined by the World Boxing Council, WBC, Silver Super Flyweight Championship.
