Esther Kolawole, Nigeria's 2022 Commonwealth bronze medallist, expressed her ambition to become the U23 Wrestling World Champion at the upcoming 2023 U23 World Wrestling Championship in Tampere, Finland, scheduled for October 23rd to 29th.
Having participated in three international championships, including the African Championship where she secured second place, a bronze medal at the Grand Prix in France, and a gold medal at the Grand Prix in Spain last July, Kolawole emphasized how these experiences have put her in good shape for the forthcoming World Championship.
Reflecting on past missed opportunities at the U23 World Championship due to negligence and a lack of regular competition, Kolawole stated her determination to rectify her mistakes and improve the technical aspects of her wrestling style. She firmly believes that her hard work will yield success at the U23 World Championship.
She said, “I have been to top notch tournaments including the African Championship where I finished second place. I won a bronze medal at the Grand Prix in France afterwards winning gold medal at the Grand Prix in Spain last July.
“In some cases, negligence has cost me the gold medal at the U23 World Championship and lack of regular competition. I am really working hard on my past mistakes and other technical aspects of my style of wrestling but I believe I will do very well at the U23 World Championship”, she said.
The former African Champion said, “I feel happy and excited to win the National Championship again. I do not have a challenger for now in my weight class in Nigeria. “I am training so hard, working day and night; my coach is not leaving any stone unturned and I have the potential of making Nigeria proud at the Paris 2024 Olympics”, she added.
Kolawole also noted that she currently faces no competition in the women's 62kg category in Nigeria. She expressed her dedication to rigorous training and highlighted her coach's unwavering commitment, all with the aim of realizing her potential and bringing pride to Nigeria at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
