Ahead of the final opportunity to secure a spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics, Nigerian wrestler Mercy Genesis, the reigning African and Commonwealth Games champion in the 50kg category, has embarked on a journey to Istanbul with the aim of clinching a place in the prestigious Games.
Having narrowly missed out on qualification at the previous African/Oceania Olympic Wrestling qualifiers in Alexandria, Egypt, Mercy Genesis is determined to become the latest addition to the Nigerian contingent bound for the Olympics by earning her qualification in Istanbul, Turkey, where the World Olympic qualifiers will be held.
Accompanied by her coach, Akuh Purity, Mercy Genesis is set to grapple with renowned wrestlers from around the globe in the hopes of securing her place in the Olympics. The competition in Istanbul promises to be fierce, with high-profile athletes vying for the limited Olympic quotas available in each weight category.
The upcoming qualifier in Istanbul will allocate a total of 54 Olympic quotas across all six weight classes of the three wrestling styles. In each weight category, three Paris Olympic spots are up for grabs, with one slot awarded to each finalist and one to the winner of the wrestle-off between the two bronze medalists.
Before her departure, Daniel Igali, the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, expressed confidence in Mercy Genesis's ability to secure another Olympic ticket, which would bring the total number of Olympic slots earned by Nigerian wrestlers to seven for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Igali, who is also the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Sports Development, conveyed his best wishes to Mercy Genesis, emphasizing the federation's high expectations for a successful Olympic qualifiers and subsequent Olympic qualification.
