Naoya Inoue's upcoming super-bantamweight world title defense against Sam Goodman on Christmas Eve in Tokyo has been postponed after the Australian sustained a cut during sparring. Goodman, the mandatory challenger for Inoue's WBO and IBF titles, injured his left eye during his final training session, requiring four stitches.
His manager confirmed that Goodman would need four weeks to recover, making it impossible for the fight to proceed as scheduled.
Inoue's team, Ohashi Gym, also confirmed the postponement of the bout, and Goodman's promoter expressed regret over the unfortunate injury. Goodman had been preparing for the fight as his first opportunity for a world title, with an undefeated 19-0 record, including eight knockouts.
Inoue, the undisputed champion with a 28-0 record and 25 knockouts, was scheduled to defend his titles for the third time since becoming the first fighter to be undisputed champion in two weight classes.
Inoue's most recent victory was in September against TJ Doheny in Tokyo. The postponed fight against Goodman was expected to be his last bout in Japan before moving on to a potential clash in Las Vegas next year. Inoue's historic achievement makes him just the second fighter in the four-belt era to become an undisputed world champion in two different weight classes, following Terence Crawford.
