Liam Williams, a prominent Welsh boxer and former world title challenger, has announced his retirement from boxing, citing concerns over the long-term effects of multiple concussions. At 32, Williams, who has held British, European, and Commonwealth titles, has made the difficult decision to step away from the sport due to worries about sustaining further head injuries and potential damage to his brain.
In a candid reflection, Williams admitted that he fought Chris Eubank Jr. in 2022 while still feeling the effects of a concussion and against medical advice, driven by a desire not to disappoint his fans. However, following his last match—a first-round knockout loss to Hamzah Sheeraz in February—he recognized that he had reached his limit and didn't want to continue fighting solely for financial gain at the risk of jeopardizing his health and family future.
Williams expressed deep concern over chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a serious brain condition associated with repeated head trauma and concussions. The condition, which worsens over time and can lead to dementia, can only be definitively diagnosed after death. "I know that boxing is brutal," Williams acknowledged, highlighting the inherent risks of the sport he has dedicated much of his life to.
