The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) on Friday unveiled its plan to host the maiden Individual Boxing Club Championship in Mushin.
Titi Oshodi, the Director of Public Relations for LSSC, disclosed that the Lagos State Government-backed grassroots development boxing competition would be held from Oct. 21 to 27.
She also mentioned that Bishop Aggey Senior Secondary School, Mushin, Lagos, would host the competition, which is expected to include both male and female categories.
"Boxers will converge for the 7-day tournament designed to unearth more talents, encourage mass participation of clubs, and promote inclusiveness, serving as an outlet for pugilists to intensify their preparations for the forthcoming national championships."
"The championship will feature male and female boxers from various registered boxing clubs in the State, with each coach registering one boxer per weight category, in 13 male and 12 female weight classes."
"The 13 male weight categories that will be on display are 48kg, 51kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 63.5kg, 67kg, 71kg, 75kg, 80kg, 86kg, 92kg, and 92+kg."
"The female weight categories are 48kg, 50kg, 52kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 63kg, 66kg, 70kg, 75kg, 81kg, and 81+kg," she said.
Oshodi added: "The concept of the Lagos State Individual Club Boxing Championship is to encourage clubs across the state and empower the youth, in line with grassroots sports development."
"The week-long championship will follow a knock-out format where a defeated boxer is automatically eliminated."
"Every winner in the different weight categories, both male and female, will proceed to the next phase under the supervision of the state's referees and judges."
"The promotion of sports is not limited to boxing, as LSSC is working diligently to continue its effective developmental programs."
"This will serve as an avenue to highlight the impact of physical activities on the community, shape the lives of the youth, and bring competitive sports to the grassroots level," she said.
The LSSC spokesperson further clarified that the championship was primarily designed to discover budding talents, encourage mass participation in sports, and promote inclusiveness by engaging talented athletes at the grassroots level.
"The forthcoming Lagos State Individual Boxing Club Championship will be staged in the five divisions of the State."
"The pilot edition will take place in Mushin due to the high concentration of boxers, while Ajegunle will be the next venue after this first edition."
"This championship has come to fruition through the relentless efforts of the LSSC, under the leadership of the Director-General, Lekan Fatodu, who has shown significant interest in sports development."
"The Lagos State Referees and Judges Officials will be deployed and engaged for the duration of the championship to ensure fair and well-coordinated officiating standards," she concluded.
