Joe Joyce defends aggressive style in London rematch
Posted : 01 July 2023
Joe Joyce, the British heavyweight boxer, has stated that he has no intentions of altering his fighting style when he faces Zhilei Zhang in their rematch on September 23rd in London. Zhang, from China, caused an upset in their previous encounter when the fight was stopped due to an eye injury suffered by Joyce.
Despite criticism of his aggressive tactics and defense, Joyce remains steadfast in his approach and refuses to make significant changes.
Joyce embraces a style that involves absorbing punches in order to deliver more impactful blows. He recognizes the risks associated with this approach but finds it thrilling and is determined to rectify his loss to Zhang.
He aims to improve himself during training and become a better version of his fighting persona, known as the "Juggernaut," to secure victory over Zhang. Enhancing his defense is an obvious area for improvement, according to Joyce.
The 37-year-old Joyce wasted no time activating his rematch clause after the unexpected defeat. He was previously undefeated in 15 fights and even held the status of mandatory challenger to Oleksandr Usyk's WBO title. Joyce's objective is to reclaim his position as a mandatory challenger and be in line for a shot at the WBO belt when it is defended by Usyk.
Joyce acknowledges the need to swiftly regain his position and avoid giving Zhang an opportunity to move ahead in the rankings. He wants to take the most direct route possible to his title shot.
The rematch will be a crucial step in achieving his goals, and he is determined to make the necessary adjustments to counter Zhang's southpaw stance, as identified by his promoter, Frank Warren. Warren believes that Joyce's ability to adapt and cope with Zhang's style will be the key to victory in the rematch.
