Janibek Alimkhanuly preserves WBO middleweight world title, knocks out Steven Butler

Posted : 14 May 2023
Janibek Alimkhanuly of Kazakhstan successfully defended his WBO middleweight world championship by knocking out Canadian Steven Butler in the second round.

The 30-year-old down Butler three times before the referee stopped the fight after catching Butler with a left hook and a sequence of lefts.

Southpaw Alimkhanuly has won 14 matches without losing, including nine knockouts.

He then attacked American Jermall Charlo and Mexican Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

While Charlo is in possession of the WBC middleweight championship, Alvarez is the undisputed super-middleweight champion.

"Champions and boxing superstars, where are you?" Alimkhanuly said.

"I'm the most avoided fighter. I'm the middleweight king.

"Canelo and Charlo, I'm coming. I'm ready for anybody, any time, anywhere."

Jason Moloney of Australia defeated Vincent Astrolabio by majority decision to claim the vacant WBO bantamweight title on the same card in Stockton, California.

The 32-year-old Melbourne native prevailed with scores of 115–113 and 116–112, respectively, while the third judge scored the contest a draw.
