Jack Catterall Avenges Loss to Josh Taylor in Rematch Showdown

Posted : 28 May 2024

In a highly anticipated rematch labeled as a grudge match, Jack Catterall (29-1; 13) avenged his previous loss to former undisputed junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor (19-2; 13) by securing a unanimous 12-round points victory on Saturday night at the Direct Arena in Leeds, England. Their initial encounter took place 27 months ago in Glasgow, Scotland, where Taylor controversially won on points. However, this time, Catterall emerged as the clear victor in another closely contested bout, with judges scoring it 117-111 twice and 116-113 in his favor.

On the undercard, in a cruiserweight clash, Cheavon Clarke (9-0; 7) claimed victory via an eighth-round knockout against Ellis Zorro (17-2; 7), securing the vacant British title with a powerful right hand that sent Zorro crashing to the canvas at 2:59 into the round. Welterweight Paddy Donovan (14-0; 11) stopped Lewis Ritson (23-4; 13) in the ninth round, retaining the WBA Continental title with a stoppage just 32 seconds into the round.

In another bout, Gary Cully (18-1; 10) secured a points victory over former European champion Francesco Patera (29-5; 11) after ten rounds of lightweight action, with judges scoring it 96-94 twice and 98-92 in favor of Cully. Meanwhile, in a super middleweight clash in Shawinigan, Quebec, Canada, Christian Mbilli (27-0; 23) demolished Mark Heffron (30-4-1; 24) in the first round, delivering a barrage of body shots to secure victory in just 40 seconds.

Additionally, at the River Cree Resort Casino in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Vlad Panin (19-1; 11) scored a second-round knockout over former two-division world champion Devon Alexander (27-9-1; 14) in a middleweight bout, with the referee stopping the fight after Panin dropped Alexander with a short-left hand. Moreover, Lawrence Okolie (20-1; 15) clinched the WBC bridgerweight title with a first-round stoppage against Lukasz Rozanski (15-1; 14) at the Podpromie Arena in Rzeszow, Poland, after knocking down Rozanski three times within the opening round, concluding the bout at 2:55 into the round.
