Israel Adesanya Ends Hiatus, Set to Face Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 305 in Perth

Former UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya has announced his return from hiatus to face current champion Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 305, scheduled for August 17 at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia. Adesanya's social media post with the fight date and a caption "Never stole shine, never lost mine" confirmed the matchup.

 

UFC president Dana White confirmed the fight during an appearance on The Jim Rome Show, marking Adesanya's comeback after his last fight, where he lost the title to Sean Strickland in a shocking upset last September. Initially suggesting a prolonged break until 2027, Adesanya's return comes within a year, setting up a high-stakes bout against Du Plessis.

The matchup holds significance as Adesanya and Du Plessis have been embroiled in a heated rivalry, sparked by Du Plessis' claims of being the UFC's true African champion, contrasting Adesanya's Nigerian heritage and New Zealand residency. Their animosity escalated after Du Plessis won the title by defeating Robert Whittaker, leading to a confrontation in the Octagon with Adesanya at UFC 290.

 

Despite their feud, the anticipated bout was delayed when Adesanya lost the title to Strickland at UFC 293. However, Du Plessis subsequently claimed the championship, setting the stage for their long-awaited clash in Perth, where they will headline the Pay-Per-View card on August 17.
