IOC removes IBA from boxing governing body due to governance and corruption concerns
Posted : 23 June 2023
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has voted to remove the International Boxing Association (IBA) as the governing body of boxing.
The decision came after the IBA failed to meet the required reforms following its suspension in 2019 due to issues of governance and alleged corruption.
Out of 70 valid votes, 69 were in favor of the IOC's recommendation. In response to the decision, the IBA accused the IOC of a "tremendous error" and compared it to Germany's actions in World War II.
To address concerns over finance, governance, ethics, refereeing and judging, the IOC took charge of organizing boxing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and will do so again for Paris 2024.
Initially left off the program for Los Angeles 2028, IOC director general Christophe de Kepper assured that boxing will be included in the event. The final program for the 2028 Games will be decided by the IOC in October.
The IBA claimed to have implemented all recommendations outlined by the IOC, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) rejected their appeal against the IOC's recommendation.
The IOC emphasized that they do not have a problem with the sport of boxing or the boxers themselves, stating that they deserve to be governed by an international federation with integrity and transparency.
In contrast, World Boxing, a breakaway federation, welcomed the decision to strip the IBA of its status and expressed its commitment to working collaboratively with the IOC and other stakeholders to secure boxing's place in the Olympic program.
The IOC's decision to remove the IBA as the governing body of boxing stems from concerns over governance issues and alleged corruption. The IOC will continue to oversee boxing in the upcoming Olympics while working towards preserving the sport's long-term place in the Olympic program.
