From Tennis Dreams to Boxing Glory: Jordan Thompson's journey to world title contention
Posted : 29 September 2023
Jordan Thompson, a cruiserweight hailing from Manchester, stands on the verge of realizing his dream of becoming a British boxing world champion, despite his earlier aspirations in tennis.
The 30-year-old, boasting an undefeated record of 15 professional bouts, is set to challenge Australia's IBF world champion, Jai Opetaia, at Wembley's OVO Arena this Saturday.
Thompson, whose childhood dream of serving for a championship point at Wimbledon never materialized, shares that tennis was his "first love." He achieved a ranking in the top 10 nationally in both the under-16s and under-18s categories and held the number one spot in Lancashire for a period. His tennis journey took him across the world and the UK, and he cherished every moment of it.
However, at the age of 18, Thompson decided to retire from tennis, not due to a lack of effort or potential but primarily because of the challenges he faced in securing sponsorship.
He acknowledges that funding was a significant obstacle to fulfilling his tennis potential, and he didn't have the financial support enjoyed by some other athletes.
While the atmosphere of a boxing arena, with fans singing along to Neil Diamond's 'Sweet Caroline,' differs greatly from the ambiance of Wimbledon, Thompson identifies several parallels between boxing and tennis.
He notes that both sports can be emotionally taxing and mentally demanding. In both, athletes often find themselves in solitary battles, even when part of a team. The ups and downs, the twists and turns, and the sudden reversals of fortune are common experiences in both boxing and tennis, requiring mental fortitude and resilience.
Thompson's journey from tennis to boxing is a testament to his determination and adaptability as he pursues his dream of becoming a world champion in the boxing ring.
