Frank Warren confirms Derek Chisora is Daniel Dubois' mandatory challenger

Posted : 26 March 2025

Daniel Dubois might need to wait for his highly anticipated rematch against Oleksandr Usyk. According to promoter Frank Warren, Dubois, the IBF heavyweight world champion, could instead face Derek Chisora. Chisora's last win was a commanding victory over Otto Wallin in Manchester, while Dubois, 14 years younger than Chisora, famously defeated Anthony Joshua at Wembley in September. Warren confirmed that Chisora is now Dubois’ mandatory challenger.

Dubois had been expected to fight Usyk in a highly anticipated undisputed heavyweight world title bout at Wembley. However, earlier this month, the WBO ordered Usyk to defend his title against interim champion Joseph Parker. An exemption could be requested from both parties to prioritize the Usyk-Dubois fight, which Warren considers the “No. 1 choice.” Warren, who also represents Parker, mentioned that the decision now lies with Usyk regarding his next opponent.

Warren explained that the IBF’s mandatory challenger for Dubois is Derek Chisora, which could delay the Usyk rematch if Dubois is forced to fight Chisora first. However, he stated that the IBF might still allow a unification bout if the WBO approves it. “The ball is in Usyk’s court,” Warren remarked, referencing the Ukrainian’s upcoming decisions.

Warren further elaborated that three options are now on the table: a unification fight between Usyk and Dubois, a title defense against Joseph Parker, or vacating the IBF belt. He emphasized that the unification fight is the priority because of the significant appeal it has, particularly due to the controversial ending of their first encounter. Warren believes that the Usyk-Dubois fight would either sell out Wembley or generate massive interest in Riyadh.

For Dubois, the rematch with Usyk is the preferred option. Warren expressed confidence that Dubois has improved since their previous bout, making it an exciting opportunity. Additionally, he noted that Joseph Parker would maintain his position as interim champion, which ensures that he would fight the winner of the Usyk-Dubois clash.

In the event that Usyk does not fight Dubois, Warren suggested that Dubois could face a top 10 contender in a voluntary defense. The rematch between Dubois and Usyk remains highly anticipated, following Usyk’s knockout victory over Dubois in August 2023. That fight was marred by controversy when Dubois appeared to land a low blow but was penalized for it, despite earlier knocking down Usyk.

Meanwhile, Chisora continued his career with an impressive victory in his 49th fight, dominating Otto Wallin at the Co-Op Live Arena in Manchester. He knocked Wallin down twice, securing a unanimous points win. Chisora’s performance further solidified his position as a legitimate challenger for Dubois' IBF title.
