Former heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, still dreams of third stint at 3rd world title

Posted : 02 January 2025

Former heavyweight champion and British boxer Anthony Joshua has said that he still harbors the ambition to return to the ring and take a shot at reclaiming his lost World Heavyweight title.

Anthony Joshua, who is visiting his native country, Nigeria, said he was optimistic about his chances despite his recent setback with a shocking defeat to Daniel Dubois. Moving forward, the two-time world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, is preparing for another shot at the title.

The Sagamu-born boxer dropped the hint when he visited President Bola Tinubu at his home in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Speaking about his goals for the new year, the British-Nigerian boxer said, “My target is to become a three-time world champion and fight Tyson Fury in 2025,” he said.

He acknowledged previous setbacks while reflecting on the highs and lows of his career and underlined his resolve to overcome them, saying, “Of course, I should have won [past matches], but I didn’t. I can’t stop now; I have to keep going until I reach my destination.”

Joshua, who is in Nigeria for the holiday season, described the energy in the country as “10/10”, expressing gratitude for the warm reception by President Tinubu and praising the hospitality extended to him and his family.

“They did an amazing job hosting me. I got to see how the country is organized and run and learn about the big plans for the future,” he said.

Joshua stressed his resolve to take advantage of every chance and outperform his previous results when talking about his goals for 2025.

“Hunger makes you want to work harder because time is limited. When I look back at 2024, I believe I could have done more, and now I have another chance in 2025. I’m going to make sure I take every opportunity,” he said.

In response to a question concerning the possibility of facing Tyson Fury, Joshua accepted the challenge but acknowledged the uncertainty.

“We’ll see. Let’s get in the ring. Only God knows, but for me, we’ll see in the future,” he remarked.

Joshua also shared a heartfelt message for Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora.

“To all Nigerians in the diaspora, you have a place called home. It’s a beautiful place, and the energy here is unbelievable. I love you all with my heart,” he said, pledging to support local communities.

“Even though I’m in London, I’ll make sure to bring good energy, opportunities, and work back to Nigeria,” he said.
