Deontay Wilder, a former heavyweight world champion, was taken into custody early on Tuesday in Los Angeles, according to the police.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has acknowledged that Wilder was detained after being apprehended around 1.15 a.m.
Just after 6.30am, the 37-year-old was released on bail.
Police have not corroborated a story by TMZ Sports that claims Wilder's car was halted by them during a routine traffic stop and that they discovered a gun inside.
Wilder tweeted a succinct remark that read:: "I'd rather be safe than sorry. The End."
A long-awaited bout between the American and his British adversary Anthony Joshua is rumored to take place in Saudi Arabia in December.
Wilder knocked out Robert Helenius in Brooklyn in the first round of his most recent battle, which took place in October.
Tyson Fury stopped him in the seventh round of their fight in 2020, ending Wilder's tenure as WBC champion. In their rematch in 2021, Wilder was stopped once more in the eleventh round.
