Deirdre Gogarty: World champion who preceded Katie Taylor

Posted : 18 May 2023
Deirdre Gogarty won the boxing world championship in January 1997, being the first Irishwoman to do so. She was promised $12,500 for the battle in the US but never received a dime.

It wasn't front-page news in my country. When she was received by friends, relatives, and a few journalists at the airport four months after the struggle with her belt, the Irish Times published the headline "Gogarty to back evangelise Ireland."

The same journal did, however, run articles that were disparaging of women's boxing.

"You get in the ring and give everything you have, and there's still people against you, who want to bring you down and not allow you to do what you love," Gogarty says.

Ireland forbade women from boxing. In 1991, Gogarty took part in her first professional fight on Irish soil; however, she was never again given permission to do so.

But 10-year-old Katie Taylor was the only one who paid attention to her.

Taylor would go on to achieve fame as an amateur and earn an Olympic gold.

She is the current undisputed lightweight champion and a world champion in numerous weight classes.
