Conor Benn set for comeback fight after doping suspension lifted
Posted : 20 September 2023
Conor Benn is set to make his return to the boxing ring on September 23rd in Florida, marking his first fight since the provisional doping suspension was lifted. The 26-year-old Englishman's absence from the ring dates back to April 2022 when he faced doping-related issues, having failed two voluntary drug tests later that year.
Benn's comeback fight will take place at a Matchroom Boxing event in Orlando, where he will face super-welterweight contender Rodolfo Orozco. Benn expressed his determination, stating, "I am undefeated in the ring, and in spirit. A return on Saturday is a step closer to redemption." He also issued a warning to the 147-160 divisions, signaling his intent to take on the top fighters in those weight classes.
Eddie Hearn, Benn's promoter, shared his excitement for Benn's return, emphasizing that the boxer is ready for significant challenges. Hearn stated, "He's ready to go straight in for a big fight now but his trainer Tony Sims will be pleased to get him back sooner against a game opponent in Rodolfo Orozco."
Benn's doping controversy stemmed from two failed Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (Vada) tests ahead of his scheduled fight with Chris Eubank Jr. in October 2022. He tested positive for the female fertility drug clomifene but has consistently maintained his innocence, asserting that he did not intentionally use banned substances.
While Benn's provisional suspension was lifted in July after a hearing, both UK Anti-Doping (Ukad) and the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) are appealing the decision. As a result, Benn does not currently hold a boxing license in the UK.
Despite the challenges, Benn, who boasts an undefeated record of 21 fights, is eager to make his mark once again in the boxing world.
His upcoming fight against Orozco is set to be part of the undercard for Richardson Hitchins' light-welterweight clash against Jose Zepeda. Orozco has expressed confidence in his preparation, indicating that he views this opportunity as the culmination of a lifelong journey and a chance to prove Benn wrong on September 23rd.
