Conor Benn predicts increased athlete positives for clomifene tests
Posted : 21 September 2023
Conor Benn, the British boxer, has expressed concerns about more athletes testing positive for clomifene as he gears up for his comeback fight against Rodolfo Orozco in Florida.
After serving a temporary suspension for a positive test for the substance, Benn, who hasn't boxed since April 2022, believes the drug entered his system via food consumption.
He stresses the importance of understanding that there's a difference between unintentional and deliberate consumption.
Clomifene, which can elevate testosterone in men, is prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada).
Benn argued against the principle of strict liability for such substances, especially if they can be ingested unknowingly.
He hopes his experience might lead to a change in how clomifene tests are approached.
Promoter Eddie Hearn emphasized the need for better education for fighters regarding potential contamination risks.
