The inaugural Comptroller General of Customs Military and Para-Military Wrestling Championship has commenced in Abuja, with Day 1 dedicated to the clinic and sensitization of athletes.
The clinic was conducted jointly by the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and officials from the Wrestling Federation.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Brigadier General Olawale Fawole, expressed that this historic tournament is set to kick off after the wrestlers underwent screening and were sensitized to the tournament rules.
General Fawole, who also serves as a board member of the Wrestling Federation, commended the Customs boss on behalf of the entire Federation for his unmatched philanthropic spirit in hosting such a national event of great magnitude.
"We are very satisfied with the turnout because, at one stage during the preparation, it seemed as though we were not receiving the necessary responses from some of the agencies. However, after the press briefing and a visit to the Chief of Defense Staff, there was a prompt response, and we are happy," he said.
"Today's clinic was developed from the vision of the Wrestling Federation, which expects all the wrestlers to be on the same page. There should be a consciousness and understanding of the rules so that the process of the championship will be smooth."
"Lastly, I want to commend the visionary who is the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service for undertaking the sponsorship of this championship. He didn't just sponsor it; he always shows dedication, passion, and interest at every stage, and we appreciate him," Gen. Fawole added.
Also speaking, the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, represented by the Vice President, Chris Amkpila, conveyed the goodwill of the Federation to the athletes as he encouraged them to use the tournament and the forthcoming Governor Douye Diri National Wrestling Classics in Yenagoa to break into the national team.
Chris Amkpila noted that the Wrestling Federation is eager to see new athletes rise through the ranks and make the country proud at international events such as the Olympics.
Those in attendance at the clinic included NWF Technical Director Darmian Ohaike, Secretary General Mohammed Maigidansanma, Olympic silver medalist Blessing Oborodudu, Dr. (Mrs.) Toyyibat Odunola Bello, Dr. Jude Amadi, Engr. Magnus Ede, Adebola Sarah Esan, Happiness Burutu, Group Capt. Abdul-Loko Muritala, representatives from the Federal Sports Ministry, and high-profile military officers.
