Chris Eubank Jr., the reigning IBO middleweight champion, has been fined £100,000 ($129,210) by the British Boxing Board of Control for slapping Conor Benn with an egg during a press conference last month, according to British media reports.
The incident occurred as the two fighters prepared for their highly anticipated bout on April 26, reigniting tensions between them. Their rivalry is deeply rooted in their family histories, as both are sons of former world champions who were fierce competitors in their era.
The fight between Eubank Jr. and Benn was initially set for 2022 but was canceled after Benn tested positive for the banned fertility drug clomifene. The World Boxing Council later cleared Benn of intentional doping in 2023, citing an excessive consumption of eggs as a plausible explanation for the failed tests.
Despite being allowed to return to the sport, Benn has continued to face scrutiny over the controversy surrounding his case.
Eubank Jr. referenced that explanation when justifying his actions at the press conference, stating that the egg slap was symbolic. After the incident, he took to Instagram, posting the phrase, "Live by the egg, die by the egg," in a pointed remark aimed at his opponent.
The altercation has added further intensity to their upcoming clash, with the long-standing family rivalry and unresolved tensions making their fight one of the most highly anticipated matchups in British boxing.
