Mexican boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez revealed on Thursday that he will defend his three super-middleweight world titles on September 14 against the undefeated Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas. This event continues Alvarez's tradition of fighting on the Mexican Independence Day weekend, a highly anticipated annual occasion for his fans. The card will also feature World Boxing Association middleweight champion Erislandy Lara, who is set to defend his title against former welterweight and light welterweight champion Danny Garcia.
Alvarez, with a record of 61-2-2 and 39 knockouts, will put his WBA, WBC, and WBO titles on the line against Berlanga, the top-rated WBA contender in the 168-pound division. Berlanga, an American boxer of Puerto Rican descent, boasts an unbeaten record of 22-0 with 17 knockouts. He secured his first world title shot after a sixth-round stoppage victory over Ireland's Padraig McCrory in February.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Alvarez stated, "I'm very happy for this fight between Mexico and Puerto Rico. I'm proud to contribute to this legacy and facing an opponent like Edgar Berlanga adds even more excitement and meaning to this event." Alvarez is coming off a successful defense of his undisputed world title, having won a 12-round decision over Mexico's Jaime Munguia in May in Las Vegas.
Berlanga, recognizing the significance of the upcoming match, said, "This is the opportunity of a lifetime. I deserve to be here, and I'm going to shock the world and silence the critics by delivering a masterful performance and knocking out Canelo Alvarez." On the same night, Cuban-born Lara, with a record of 30-3-3 and 18 knockouts, will face Garcia. Lara recently defended his WBA title with a second-round stoppage of Australian Michael Zerafa in March. Garcia, with a record of 37-3 and 21 knockouts, is aiming to win a championship in his third weight class, stating, "Lara is a great champion who has been around for a while, but so have I."
