Canelo Alvarez retains super-middleweight titles with unanimous decision victory over Jermell Charlo

Posted : 01 October 2023
Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez successfully defended his undisputed super-middleweight title with a points victory over Jermell Charlo. Canelo, aged 33, secured a unanimous decision win with scores of 119-108, 118-109, and 118-109 to retain his WBO, WBC, WBA, and IBF belts. The Mexican boxer achieved his 60th win in 64 fights.

Canelo displayed his prowess by knocking Charlo down in the seventh round during the fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Speaking after the bout, Canelo asserted his status, saying, "I'm the best. Who's better? Nobody can beat this Canelo."

Charlo, also aged 33, had been the undisputed light-middleweight champion until he was stripped of his WBO belt at the start of the fight. Canelo explained his strategy, saying, "I worked all the fight to go in the body," and credited his victory to a well-executed punch combination.

Canelo acknowledged Charlo's skills, stating, "We know he's a great fighter. He knows how to move in the ring, and we worked on countering that in the gym for three months."

Despite the sacrifices, Canelo emphasized his love for boxing, saying, "Boxing made me the person I am today. Boxing is my life."

Charlo, experiencing only the second defeat of his 38-fight career, commented, "I just feel like I wasn't me in there," but also recognized that "sometimes you win and sometimes you lose."

Additionally, Australian boxer Tim Tszyu, who held the interim WBO light-middleweight title and was the mandatory challenger to Charlo, was elevated to champion status following the bout.
