Canelo Alvarez defends middleweight title against Charlo in September
Posted : 23 June 2023
According to sources, Canelo Alvarez, boxing's biggest star, is set to defend his undisputed super middleweight championship against Jermall Charlo in September, likely on Mexican Independence Day weekend, possibly September 16. The fight is expected to be a Showtime pay-per-view event.
Alvarez, with a record of 59-2-2 and 39 knockouts, recently signed a three-fight deal with PBC (Premier Boxing Champions), with the other two fights anticipated to take place on Cinco de Mayo weekend and Mexican Independence Day weekend in 2024. While Alvarez confirmed a "done deal" for September on Instagram, he did not mention his opponent or specify the multi-fight agreement.
This deal represents a significant accomplishment for PBC, as it brings the sport's top star under its banner and away from rival promoter Eddie Hearn, whose Matchroom Boxing promoted Alvarez's previous three fights. Alvarez's most recent bout was a victorious homecoming in Mexico against John Ryder in May.
The 31-year-old Mexican fighter's last two fights with Matchroom and DAZN occurred in 2020, a defeat to Dmitry Bivol in May at 175 pounds (his only loss since facing Floyd Mayweather in 2013) and a triumph over Gennadiy Golovkin in a trilogy bout in September.
Alvarez also achieved an 11th-round TKO of Caleb Plant in a PBC on Showtime pay-per-view fight in November 2021. In terms of financial success, he was ranked fifth on Forbes' highest-paid athletes list last month, with estimated earnings of $110 million in 2022. He retains his four 168-pound titles and is currently ranked fifth pound-for-pound by ESPN.
Jermall Charlo, with a record of 32-0 and 22 knockouts, is a highly skilled fighter who was considered for the May assignment against Canelo but was ultimately passed over in favor of Bivol.
However, Charlo has not competed since June 2021 when he secured a unanimous decision victory over Juan Macias Montiel. WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman attributed Charlo's inactivity to mental health concerns. Charlo, a former 154-pound titleholder, has never fought above the 160-pound division.
