Callum Smith vs. Artur Beterbiev: World title match cancelled due to Beterbiev surgery
Posted : 31 July 2023
The title fight between Briton Callum Smith and WBC, WBO, and IBF light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev, scheduled for 19 August in Quebec, has been canceled.
Beterbiev, the unbeaten Canadian fighter, had to undergo jaw surgery, leading to the unfortunate cancellation of the highly-anticipated bout.
Callum Smith, aged 33, had moved up to the light heavyweight division after losing his WBA super-middleweight title to Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in December 2020. He earned the opportunity to face Beterbiev by winning a title eliminator against Mathieu Bauderlique in August of the same year.
Artur Beterbiev, originally from Russia, boasts an impressive unbeaten record of 19 fights, with a perfect 100% knockout ratio, making him a formidable opponent.
For Callum Smith, his sole loss in his professional career came at the hands of Mexican boxing star Saul Alvarez. However, he has since demonstrated his prowess in the light heavyweight division with victories over Lenin Castillo and Mathieu Bauderlique, bringing his record to 29 wins and 1 loss.
