Posted : 13 August 2024

The Boxing Promoters Association of Nigeria (BPAN) held its inaugural elective congress in Lagos on Monday.

The event, conducted by members of the Nigeria Bar Association, took place in the conference room of the National Institute for Sports (NIS).

Omonlei Yakubu Imadu, Chairman and CEO of Yucateco Boxing Promotions, emerged as the new President of the nascent association, while Alhaji Wasiu Alabi Waheed, founder of De Lads Boxing Promotions, was elected as Vice President. Neye Sowunmi was voted in as Secretary, and Adesina Qudus Adejunwon was appointed as Treasurer.

Other members of the executive include Yusuf Olowolekemo as Assistant Secretary, Saleh Fawaz as Head of International Affairs, Ekujumi Patrick Oladapo as Financial Secretary, Ganiyu Oladapo as Public Relations Officer (PRO), and Lawal Folashade as Welfare Officer.

Oshimi Ezekiel is BPAN’s Regional Vice President for the South/West. Oyenka Eboma Elum serves as the Ex-Officio, Edna Blade Ayebeni is BPAN’s Spokesperson, and Emanuel Edams Ezurukam is the Regional Vice President for the South East.

In his address, the newly elected President of BPAN, Omonlei Yakubu Imadu, stated that the body is committed to advancing the cause of boxing in Nigeria.

“I must say it’s a new dawn for boxing in Nigeria. As boxing promoters, we have made our marks in the sport individually, so you can imagine what we stand to achieve by working together as a body.”

“While we hope to complement the existing boxing structures in the country, you can be assured that BPAN will not hold back in charting a new course for boxing in Nigeria through its plans and programs.”

An elated Vice President of BPAN and founder of De Lads Boxing Promotions, Wasiu Alabi Waheed, praised the newly elected executives for their commitment to the association’s goals.

“This is only the start of greater things to come. With the level of commitment every member of this group has shown over the past year, I am confident that the fortunes of Nigerian boxing are about to change for the better.”

“We are all men and women of like minds with a shared vision to advance the cause of boxing in Nigeria. BPAN has come to stay, and we hope to change the narrative of the sport in the country.”

The Boxing Promoters Association of Nigeria, established over a year ago, currently has over 50 active members in its ranks.
