Boxing legend George Foreman, one of the greatest, dies

Posted : 23 March 2025

Legendary American boxer George Foreman, known for one of the most remarkable comebacks in sports history, passed away on Saturday at the age of 76. Foreman, a two-time world heavyweight champion, is survived by his wife, Mary Joan Martelli, along with his 12 children and grandchildren. His family expressed deep sorrow, stating, "My heart is broken," in an official statement shared on social media. They described him as a man of deep values, principles, and a lifelong defender of his legacy.

Born on January 10, 1949, in Marshall, Texas, Foreman moved to California where his boxing journey began. He earned a gold medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics after defeating Soviet boxer Jonas Chapolis, marking the start of a successful amateur career. In 1969, Foreman turned professional, securing a knockout victory in New York. This victory set the tone for what would become a legendary career, characterized by dominant performances and multiple records.

Foreman's fighting style and skill were showcased in several notable matches, but one of the defining moments of his career came when he defeated Joe Frazier by technical knockout in the second round. Another iconic moment came during the famous "Rumble in the Jungle" against Muhammad Ali in 1974. Despite losing the bout, Foreman’s reputation soared globally, solidifying his place as one of boxing’s most famous figures.

Throughout his career, Foreman won two world heavyweight titles, with his second victory coming at the age of 45, making him the oldest boxer to ever win the championship. His career spanned 81 professional fights, winning 76, with 68 of those victories coming by knockout, showcasing his devastating power. Despite retiring twice, Foreman made a triumphant return to the ring each time, further cementing his legacy in boxing history.

Outside the ring, Foreman found great success as an entrepreneur, most notably with the "George Foreman Grill," which sold over 100 million units globally since its debut in 1994. His entrepreneurial success mirrored his achievements in boxing. Additionally, in 1980, Foreman became a pastor, and his family referred to him as a "devout preacher." These ventures further highlighted the depth of his character beyond his boxing prowess.

In 2023, a biopic titled "Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World" was released, portraying his life journey, with actor Chris Davis playing Foreman in his youth. The film captured the essence of his remarkable transformation both inside and outside the ring.

Described as one of the most influential boxers of all time, Foreman left behind an indelible mark on the sport and the world. His final social media post, uploaded on November 5, 2024, embodied his lifelong belief that “all things are possible if we just believe.” His legacy will live on, not only in the boxing world but in the hearts of the millions he inspired.
