Boxing confirmed for Los Angeles 2028 Olympics after IOC vote

Posted : 20 March 2025

Boxing has officially secured a spot in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games following a unanimous decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Thursday. This move comes after years of uncertainty regarding the sport's future in the Olympics, offering clarity and stability for boxing's Olympic journey.

The IOC had previously granted provisional recognition to World Boxing in a significant step toward the sport’s return to the LA Games. With Thursday's vote, boxing's place in the 2028 Olympics was confirmed, ensuring that the sport will continue its presence on the Olympic stage.

IOC President Thomas Bach expressed gratitude for the decision, acknowledging the approval with optimism. “I thank you for the approval of having boxing back. We can look forward to a great boxing tournament,” Bach said after the vote, highlighting the excitement surrounding the event.

At the Paris 2024 Olympics, the IOC will oversee the boxing competition after revoking the International Boxing Association's (IBA) recognition in 2023. This was due to the IBA's failure to implement necessary reforms in governance and finance, which led the IOC to take control of the sport's Olympic operations.

Originally, boxing was not included in the LA 2028 Games program, as the IOC had called for the establishment of a new global boxing body to replace the IBA. In response, World Boxing was formed in 2023 and now boasts over 80 national federations as members, fulfilling the IOC's requirements for the sport’s inclusion.

The IOC has stipulated that only athletes from national federations that are members of World Boxing by the time the 2028 qualification events commence will be eligible to participate in the Los Angeles Games. This rule ensures that all participating athletes meet the criteria set by the new governing body.

The IOC’s decision to suspend the IBA dates back to 2019, citing issues with governance, finance, and ethics. The IBA, under Russian businessman Umar Kremlev, had close ties to the Kremlin, further complicating its relationship with the IOC. The IBA was excluded from organizing boxing events at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, and in 2023, the IOC officially stripped it of its recognition.
