Boxers set for battle of the ring, as Yucateco Boxing League Season 2 begins in Lagos

Posted : 13 August 2024

The highly anticipated Yucateco Boxing League Season 2 has kicked off in Lagos. The Week 1 round of bouts was held at Jevinik Place, Ikeja GRA, Lagos.

Hostilities began with a fierce battle in the men’s 51kg category, where Taiwo Adebayo of AGB Splendid Boxing Club defeated Samuel Dahunsi of OGBAS Families BC with a score of 3-2. Also in the men’s 51kg, Anjorin Al-Ameen of YS Rano Boxing Club secured a 3-2 victory against Lateef Adeleke of “OMO Better” Boxing Club.

It was a one-sided contest in another 51kg men’s bout as Sultan Adekonya of ESPITA Boxing Club made light work of Abijuwon Faruk of TIZIMI BC.

The men’s 57kg bout also gave the crowd plenty to cheer as both pugilists displayed a lot of grit. In the end, Rasak Erinfolami of OGBAS Boxing Club came out on top with a 3-2 victory against Ajisola Habeeb of AGB Splendid. YS Rano’s Abass Ganiu dazzled the fans with his 3-2 triumph over Basit Olayiwola of OMO Better Boxing Club in their men’s 57kg bout.

Ramadan Abiodun of TIZIMI BC lived up to his pre-match hype as he secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Ogunremi Michael of ESPITA Boxing Club. Meanwhile, Quadri Ilori of OGBAS Families BC pummeled Hassan Taiwo of AGB Boxing Club 5-0 in their men’s 53kg encounter.

Chairman and CEO of Yucateco Boxing Promotions, Omonlei Yakubu Imadu, said the organization hopes to build on the successes recorded in the opening bouts as they aim for a larger fan turnout in the coming fight weeks.

“What we have seen in Week 1 is highly encouraging; it truly shows that the boxers are prepared to go the distance this season.”

“The presence of the fans has further motivated the boxers and their teams to perform at their best. This level of enthusiasm is exactly what we need to develop amateur boxing in Nigeria, and I am pleased that Yucateco is leading this very positive revolution.”

Action resumes on Friday, August 16th, in Yaba for the Week 2 round of bouts. Twelve boxing clubs are competing for the N50 million prize money on offer in Season 2 of this widely followed boxing league.
