Anthony Joshua is set to make his return to the boxing ring on August 12th at The O2 in London. The identity of his opponent is expected to be confirmed within the next 48 hours, according to sources.
Discussions have been ongoing between Joshua and Dillian Whyte for a rematch of their December 2015 bout, which Joshua won via seventh-round TKO. Talks between the two fighters began on June 2nd.
Joshua's promoter, Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing, set a deadline for Whyte to return a signed contract by Friday evening.
However, an alternative opponent, whose identity remains undisclosed, has agreed in writing to fight Joshua on August 12th, while the negotiations with Whyte are still ongoing.
Whyte's spokesperson has stated that Whyte returned the signed agreement on Sunday morning and is unaware of any other potential opponent for Joshua. Both parties are looking forward to the rematch taking place at The O2 on August 12th.
As discussions continue, Joshua, his team, Matchroom Boxing, and broadcaster DAZN are exploring potential opponents for the upcoming fight. While signs point to Joshua and Whyte meeting again, Joshua is already looking ahead to a potential megafight with Deontay Wilder in Saudi Arabia in December, a bout that Hearn has discussed in the media for several weeks.
